- W568022545 abstract "A case report is presented of a 42-year-old male, identified as Mr. X, who exhibited dysarthria for over 1 year in the absence of other neurological signs and of unknown etiology. The purpose of this study was to characterize his dysarthria and, in particular, his articulatory deficits using a range of physiological instruments, including lip and tongue pressure transducers, electromagnetic articulography (EMA), and electropalatography (EPG). A battery of perceptual assessments was also employed to set the instrumental findings in context, and it revealed a mixed ataxic-spastic-hyperkinetic dysarthria. Instrumentally, reductions were found for tongue strength, fine pressure control, and speed and range of tongue tip movements, together with atypical tongue-to-palate contacts during alveolar stop and fricative productions. An overarching feature that Mr. X appeared to exhibit was that of increased effort, which was particularly evident for the syllable repetition tasks and for/k/and/p/in particular, with greater speeds and ranges of movement and larger areas of the palate being contacted compared to a matched control speaker. Although our current understanding of clinicoanatomic relations among neurological lesions and resultant speech disturbances limits the neurological diagnostic potential of the instrumental findings for this particular case, physiologicalbased treatment targets were identified. Indeed, an important future function of the instrumental techniques in this case would be to objectively track articulatory changes over time, thereby providing a sensitive indicator of neurological change." @default.
