- W568495004 abstract "Unprecedented urbanization has required the construction of major and heavily traveled road-ways and railways immediately adjacent to countless buildings and subjected those buildings and their occupants to traffic-induced vibrations. The response to traffic-induced vibrations by each of these buildings can be quite distinct depending upon their specific dynamic characteristics. This paper provides insight into response from vehicular traffic through the application of time history analyses to four theoretical reinforced concrete, plane-frame structures subjected to four artificially generated ground motions. The buildings' responses showed that normal vehicular traffic conditions may generate lateral velocity responses exceeding previously established thresholds for both human perceptibility and building damage. The situation most readily arises at higher mode shapes with their affiliated higher vibration frequencies, which tend to more regularly coincide with the principal frequencies of traffic-induced ground motions. This is especially true when vibrations are amplified when the modal participation mass ratios are large at higher modes. With the cases tested herein, this most commonly occurred in the second mode." @default.
