- W569846688 abstract "The general aim was to analyze the influence of physical traffic environment upon working conditions and well-being for urban bus drivers. Drivers on an inner-city route, for which traffic technical intervention program was undertaken, were compared to a demographically matched group of drivers on other routes. Questionnaires were distributed on three occasions over a period of 2.5 years. Perceived workload was significantly reduced for intervention group drivers during the period. No indices of well-being or perceived health were significantly changed. Field study measurements on the bus were undertaken twice with an interval of 1.5 years. Recorded job hassles were significantly reduced for the intervention group but not for the comparison group, time delays showed a similar although not significant tendency. Systolic blood pressure was significantly reduced during the period for the intervention group, but also for the comparison group. Heart rate was significantly reduced only for the intervention group while diastolic blood pressure remained unaffected. Intervention group drivers reported a significantly reduced rate of distress after work between the study occasions. The job hassles were found to be a mediating link between the traffic environment and systolic blood pressure and heart rate reactions during work, and perceived distress after work. It was found that changes in perceived workload predicted changes in work-related fatigue and strain, and psychosomatic complains, but not consumption of stress-related substances. These results did not differ between male and female drivers, and no workload by gender interactions were found. A cluster analysis based on individual job-stress reactions gave one pattern characterised by positive relationships between job hassles and psychophysiological and self-reported reactions during work, whereas in the second cluster these relationships were neutral or slightly negative. Different patterns of unwinding between the clusters were found. The traffic-technical system was interpreted from a socio-technical perspective. (A)" @default.
