- W56984829 abstract "This chapter presents a study on the effects of osmotic stress by urea or mannitol on carps and tilapia. In the study, the stenohaline carp and the euryhaline tilapia were treated with hypo- and hyperosmotic concentrations of urea or mannitol. The changes in blood and muscle during acclimatization were followed for some days of treatment. Carps survived only for 30 h in hyperosmotic and for 7 days in hypoosmotic mannitol. However, they were able to survive for a longer time in more than 300 m-mol urea. For a short time, 500 m-mol urea were tolerated. Tilapia could survive for 1 week in 350 m-mol mannitol, but these fish only tolerated 200 m-mol urea for a longer time. They survived for 2 days in 300 m-mol urea. Urea and mannitol had different effects on osmoregulation. Urea easily penetrated into the animal and also into the cells. An equilibrium depended on penetration and excretion rate. However, mannitol could not penetrate into the animal. Hyperosmotic mannitol increased the plasma osmolality in carps from 270 to 340 m-osm despite a decrease of Na concentration from 130 to 90 m-mol. There was an increase of K, Ca, and Mg concentrations accounting for about 15-20 m-mol. It was clear from the study that carps could not survive in mannitol because of the loss of Na." @default.
