- W570102289 abstract "The objective of the work presented in this paper was to evaluate and characterize the modulus properties of the rut-resistant HMA mixes used in Texas' perpetual pavements. Currently, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) recommends at least an 8 inches (200 mm) thick layer of Stone-Filled Hot-Mix Asphalt Concrete (SFHMAC) mix, with a 1-inch (25 mm) nominal maximum aggregate size, for the intermediate structural rut-resistant layer (RRL) in a perpetual pavement structure. The mix-design typically consists of a moderately low asphalt-binder content and coarse aggregate gradation to ensure rut resistance. However, perpetual pavements are relatively a new concept to Texas with limited use or documented literature including the modulus properties; in particular for the rut-resistant 1-inch SFHMAC mixes. In this study, laboratory modulus characterization of the RRL mixes was accomplished with the Dynamic Modulus (DM) test while field in-situ pavement RRL moduli were determined by backcalculating properties from the Falling weight deflectometer (FWD) test data. Analysis of the results based on eight field projects indicated that the Texas RRL mixes are generally very stiff HMA mixes with high moduli values averaging 1150 ksi (based on laboratory DM testing) and 1750 ksi (based on FWD measurements) at 77o F; which is structurally essential for rutting resistance. In conformity with these mixes' high stiffness nature, the measured field surface deflections have generally remained very low even in the high summer temperatures of around 108o F; an indication that the mixes are also considerably less temperature sensitive. Summarily, the findings of this study suggests that the structural design moduli for the Texas 1-inch SFHMAC mixes should be in the range of about 800 to over 1200 ksi instead of the current design value of 500 to 750 ksi." @default.
