• W570111059 abstract "Few pedestrian studies have been undertaken on other than major city streets which are pedestrian dominated. In the post World War II period with few exceptions the pedestrian in major city streets has been treated as, and designed for, in like manner to any other vehicle. The purposes for developing pedestrian zones are traffic management, economic revitalisation, environmental improvements and social benefits. The factors affecting the creation of a pedestrian zone are complex and overlapping by nature and must be recognised and understood for a successful development to be achieved. The importance of abutting and adjacent land use has rarely been considered as part of the study and design function, particularly the effect on lateral flows. The pedestrian as an individual is at last receiving recognition, however the psychology of his needs, requirements and the satisfying of his emotions or desires are yet to be studied in his environment. The further development of the pedestrian zone theory into the pedestrian requirements of the urban community is yet to be faced. Considerable work and research is required into this field.
