- W570153067 abstract "Kynurenic acid (KA) affects multiple receptors and is elevated in the brainstem during neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Aspiration pneumonia associated with dysphagia and dystussia is common in these disorders. The medial reticular formation (MRF) caudal to obex is important for cough coordination. We speculated this region is also important for swallow. Electromyograms of geniohyoid (GH), thyroarytenoid (ThAr), upper esophageal sphincter (UES), thyrohyoid (TH), parasternal (PS) and transversus abdominis (TA) were recorded in anesthetized cats. Cough and swallow were elicited by tracheobronchial stimulation and intraoral water injection respectively. KA (50nL; 50mM) was microinjected bilaterally at 6 locations within the MRF. During swallow, KA induced differential effects on cranial motor activity (decreased: TH, ThAr, and GeHy and increased: UES), but the spinal motor component (PS) did not change. During cough, cranial motor drive did not change, but there was a decrease in motor drive to spinal motoneuron pools (PS, TA). The results support multiple effects of KA including direct actions at/near the injections and secondary synaptic effects on anatomically distant neural assemblies.
