- W570222015 abstract "Publisher Summary Glycomimetics can be considered to be chemical entities that mimic the biological essence of carbohydrates. This chapter presents an overview of the general concepts that underpin the development of glycomimetics as pharmacologically useful molecules. Common structural changes to carbohydrate structures that are presented include replacement of the ring oxygen or substitution of the glycosidic oxygen, with nitrogen, sulfur or carbon. Such substitutions are usually made to impart a degree of metabolic or biological stability into the compounds being developed or to generate compounds that mimic transition-state structures from glycohydrolase reactions. Replacement of entire sialic acid moieties with simple charged functionality is also discussed in the chapter, especially in regard to developing useful biological probes. Furthermore, a brief overview of glycomimetics in current clinical use is also presented and emerging themes of potential future relevance to the field are described." @default.
