- W57039710 abstract "Scholarship can be exciting, and so can story behind scholarship. This essay—in its earlier incarnation, a talk—recounts my explorations involv- ing Poe's Dupin stories ( 1987-91; 2004-8) and Hawthorne's Scarlet (1992-2003), work that led to Threads of The Scarlet Letter (2003) and Edgar Allan Poe and Dupin Mysteries (2008, 2011). My scholarly peregrina- tions took me from Nantucket to Colindale, England (for Poe), and from Salem to San Marino, California (for Hawthorne). My adventures involved identi- fying and following a trail of evidence, assisted by librarians and curators and sometimes-surprising serendipity. These adventures led to interpretive conse- quences concerning genesis, form, and significance of a work. This essay con- veys firsthand pleasures of scholarly Edgar Allan Poe once wrote in The Domain of Arnheim (1847) that four elementary principles, or, more strictly, conditions, of bliss are free exercise in open air, the love of woman, the contempt of ambition, and an object of unceasing pursuit. 1 For me, object(s) of unceasing pursuit have long been Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne. This essay is story of my last twenty- five years of adventures with Poe and Hawthorne. story I'll offer here, about Poe's Dupin tales and Hawthorne's Scarlet , is just one instance of our larger scholarly endeavor. It was 1987. I was preparing for a conference I was organizing on Poe's Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym on Nantucket Island. My gracious hostess, Susan F. Beegel—now editor of Hemingway Review—suggested that in half hour we had before a fund-raising visit with a vice president from Pacific National Bank, we could stop at Nantucket Atheneum. What I would find there would lead eventually to my book Edgar Allan Poe and Dupin Mysteries. 2" @default.
