- W570911662 abstract "Reinforced concrete arches in two bridges connecting the island of KRK in the Adriatic Sea with the mainland of Yugoslavia have been erected by applying a cantilever-like method, with provisional steel ties strengthened by cables. This method enables the construction of bridge arches of large spans, and among them is the span of 390 M representing the world record. Such a method had already been applied in the construction of the two large bridge arches in Yugoslavia; in 1965, the arch of the span of 246.4 M, and in 1967 another bridge arch of the span of 193.2 M had been constructed. As regards the arches of the island of KRK-mainland bridge, the described method was applied for the construction of the reduced, central part of the arch. This part was utilized for the subsequent erection of the remaining lateral parts to form the total arch cross section. This was a substantial contribution to the construction of large span arches, with a comparatively small quantity of steel sections used for the temporary section tie (approximately 420 tons) and an even smaller quantity of cables (approximately 265 tons) used for strengthening of the ties and anchors fixed to the rock at the coast. All steel elements for the falsework can be utilized for future construction work. The box of the central part of the arches and their lateral parts are composed of elements prefabricated on shore, or directly on floating barges, which were used for transportation of the elements to the spot where they should be erected. The erection was performed by cable cranes with a capacity of 10 tons (two parallel cable cranes within the larger span, and a single one for the small span) and by the floating cranes. The central parts of the arch were constructed from prefabricated segments within an extremely short period for such work. The large span arch of 390 M was completed in 13 months, the smaller arch, with a span of 244 M, was joined at the crown within 5 months and 12 days. The remaining lateral parts of the arches were erected and all subsequent joints concreted so that the arches were complete within 11 months. This could be done in spite of the fact that the work had to be postponed three months annually on account of exceptionally strong winds during the winter season. (TRRL)" @default.
