- W57115295 abstract "This essay examines the issue of violence and peace in five religious traditions of eastern provenance, namely Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, and Islam. In Hinduism there is some ambiguity regarding these concepts, for while some scriptures extol non-violence as the supreme dharma others exhort warfare and the destruction of evil beings. Gandhi, the Indian leader, who was a devout Hindu, however advocated and adhered to the principle of ahimsa, non-violence, unequivocally. Buddhism also advocates peace and non-violence as the first precept, but there have been instances when Buddhist monks have engaged in war and non-violence, in the contemporary world, notably in Sri Lanka. Buddhist apologists explain these as lapses from grace or the inherent weakness of human nature. Jains have carried the principle of ahimsa to the extreme and are careful not to hurt even small living things such as insects. In Sikhism though there are some external symbols of a martial nature (the Khalsa) Guru Nanak, the founder, and the Guru Granth Sahib extol meekness, peace, and non-violence. In Islam the concept of Jihad is vastly misunderstood, and though the word ‘Islam’ itself connotes peace Islam is nowadays associated with extreme acts of violence due to events in world politics. The teaching of the Qur’an about war and peace is also not always consistent." @default.
