- W571186120 abstract "This article examines past, present, and emerging trends in tyre fibre physics and chemistry, and presents some challenging future possibilities. Because of its good balance of desirable properties, steel cord has become the major reinforcement for the belts of radial tyres for cars and for both the belts and carcass of heavy-duty radial truck tyres. Many research and development (RD (2) cords with higher tensile strength, better corrosion resistance, and longer fatigue life; (3) new cord constructions; and (4) modified coatings for better adhesion retention. Polyethylene terephthalate (polyester or PET) fibres also have an excellent balance of properties, and are used extensively to reinforce the carcass or body plies of car and light truck tyres. Theoretically, there could be polymer fibres with much higher strength and modulus than PET fibres. RD and (2) lyotropic liquid crystalline polymers. It is also possible to prepare such fibres by spinning suitable isotropic solutions. Gel spinning is the preferred approach to producing high- strength, high-modulus fibres from flexible macromolecules. For both metallic and polymeric fibre reinforcements, RD (2) material microstructure; and (3) structure-property relationships. For the covering abstract see IRRD 861693." @default.
