• W571367652 abstract "In 1995 the Governments of lndonesia and Japan launched the Biodiversity Conservation Project (BCP), a technical cooperation project between RCB-LIPI (Research Centre for Biology, Indonesian Institute of Sciences), PHKA (Directorate General of Forest Protection and Nature Conservation), and JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency). BCP's overall goal is to contribute to the achievement of the BAPI. The activities under BCP have mainly been conducted in three parts: the strengthening of institutional capabilities in research and learning, improving the National Park management and developing a database system for biodiversity conservation. This includes the activities for in-situ conservation as well as those for ex-situ conservation. The in-situ conservation activities have concentrated on Gunung Halimun National Park. Researchers have been condueting a considerable amount of research on taxonomy and ecology in GHNP, while the National Park Office have been trying to establish a model for sustainable park management with good collaboration between the national park and local communities. Good collaboration between researchers and park managers is also expected. rnGHNP is a unique ecosystem where some of the last and largest moist, mountainous, tropical rainforests still remain on Java, with a rich fauna and flora, which includes many endangered species such as the leopard, the Javan gibbon and the Javan hawk-eagle. The natural resources of GHNP are also important for the local people, because they provide local communities with a lot of benefits such as water for rice fields and forest products. Around GHNP, for example, we can see many plant species being utilized as traditional medicine by the local people. This is also an example of the sustainable use of natural resources. These plant species could contribute to the local economy if successfully cultivated. The forests of GHNP have been preserved in comparatively good condition. However, recently they have been suffering from destruction due to illegal logging and gold mining, in some parts of the park. The forest could provide people with constant benefits if used wisely, but once destroyed, the capital of the green bank will be lost forever. Therefore, more effort is needed to raise the awareness of the benefits of the forests among the various stakeholders. With this point of view in mind, the authors conducted a survey on the utilization ofplant species, for traditional medicine, around GHNP. In the forests, they looked for these plant species and collected the necessary data, while in the villages they interviewed the local people about their utilization of medical plants, including local names, uses, and ways of processing etc. You can see the fruitfuI results of their work in this book, which also shows one way in which the local communities can and do coexistwith GHNP." @default.
