- W572218360 abstract "The meaning of a work of art is never exhausted. Albert camus' the stranger is a good exemple of this to the degree that it always keeps its own secret meaning, even after half a century. What is it which makes of this apparently transparent wok an enigma that still escapes us ? there is a simple response : it is the ambiguity which is shown in the form of the work as well as in its essence. The present study proposes therefore to read the stranger by this detour of its ambiguity, considered as the unifying principle of the work, where the goal of the re-reading is not to surmount but merely to demonstrate it insofar as possible. From the point of view of the literary genre, the stranger is neither completely a novel, nor fully just a narrative, since it eludes the usual norm. As narrative, it could be a diary written in the present as welle as a restrspective account. Taken as a whole, it is a diary disguised as a novel. But who is the author of this disguise? it is meursault and not camus, which is to say that we are considering the stranger as the work of meursault. That constitues the starting point of our interpretation of this ambigous text. Thus we must imagine meursault as the writer. In his work he showes everything by hiding it deeper. He juges himself guilty while carefully concealing the body. And he accepts the death penalty while denouncing the cruel inhumanity of capital punishment. In brief, he is guilty, but he is made to appear as innocent. There is the ambiguity, the work of deceit which meursault brings about by means of his ambigous language. If meursault is au outsider, it is because he speaks an ordinary language which no one else speaks as he does. He is an ordinary stranger. Thus he incarnates the ambiguity which is particular to human speech and, thanks to which, literature is enriched. In the end, it is the art of camus which triumphs." @default.
