- W57271738 abstract "Many branches of industry are presently devoting a great deal of attention to technology for granulation of chemicals in order to produce granules of uniform size and spherical shape. One of the most important problems involved is that of determining granule size, since cooling time, bulk weight, flowability, tendency to cake, and other properties depend on granule diameter. Significant droplet deformation is undesirable in the granulation of coal-tar pitch, a material that solidifies quickly, since the granules then become shapeless flakes, which causes their appearance to deteriorate and their flowability to decrease. Such a product has a greater tendency to cake and form lumps. Dewatering and drying conditions deteriorate and the flakes quickly break up during loading and unloading operation, so that large amounts of fines and dust are formed. Determination of the degree of droplet deformation as a function of droplet diameter and the physicochemical properties of the molten pitch and ambient medium, as well as establishment of the maximum diameter of a free-falling droplet in air that retains a shape close to spherical or ellipsoidal (with a low semiaxis ratio) are therefore of interest. This article examins various aspects of the aerodynamics of falling pitch droplets in air. more » The critical value of the Weber criterion, which characterizes the onset of secondary droplet breakup and maximum droplet size at the stability limit, was found. The mechanism by which a vertically falling pitch stream breaks up into droplets was studied. Formulas were derived for determination of the diameter of the granules formed and their degree of deformation as functions of the physical properties of the molten pitch and the diameter of the initial stream.
