- W575428841 abstract "The durability of reinforced concrete in respect of its ability to withstand the corrosive effects of chlorides and/or carbonation can be improved by, in particular, the proper control of water/cement ratio and the use of appropriate blended cements. However, the extent to which this improvement can be achieved in practice may be insufficient, in some environments, to achieve a full design life without corrosion damage. By using a combination of monitoring techniques to detect the commencement and the rate of corrosion at different depths in the cover concrete, due to chloride diffusion and/or carbonation, it is possible to give building or structure owners some years to plan appropriate corrosion control measures. Such monitoring enables a strategy to be exercised, avoiding concrete repair and utilising the most cost effective corrosion control measure(s). For those new structures or buildings where the environment is such that, even with the most durable concrete practically available at that location, corrosion is likely to initiate and result in significant damage during the working life of the structure or building, a different approach may be appropriate. Cathodic prevention, a low current low cost system of cathodic protection, can be installed at the time of construction and can prevent corrosion initiation even with very high levels of chloride contamination or carbonation. For existing structures or buildings, often constructed to less than ideal durability standards and exposed to chlorides and/or carbonation, cost effective corrosion control and life extension can often be best achieved with cathodic protection, re-alkalisation or chloride extraction. All of these techniques involve the application of electrochemistry to steel in concrete. These techniques are well founded in established scientific knowledge and they should be properly considered by reinforced concrete durability specialists, at the time of new structure design or existing structure assessment. They offer the prospect of significant cost savings and reliable life extension for structures at risk of corrosion when compared with alternate long term, protection and repair techniques. For the covering abstract see ITRD E111699." @default.
