- W5756192 abstract "The most valuable printed book given to Cambridge University Library in its long history of generous benefactions is its Gutenberg Bible. This Bible was part of the relatively small but choice collection of rarities formed, with a minimum of publicity, by the London barrister Arthur William Young (Trinity College, B.A. 1876, M.A. 1884), and donated to his university in 1933.1 Young acquired his Gutenberg Bible from Bernard Quaritch, who had bought it at Sotheby's Hopetoun House sale, 1889. Seymour De Ricci, in 1911, knew of Young's ownership, but respected his desire for anonymity.2 The earlier history of the copy is not entirely certain. The common story, already current at the time of the Hopetoun sale, is that it was acquired by Charles Hope (1681-1742), first Earl of Hopetoun from 1703. Hope is said to have purchased en bloc the library of the Strassburg Jesuits, a purchase supposed to have taken place around 1700, when Hopetoun House (Abercorn, W. Lothian) was being built.3 The story cannot, apparently, be confirmed and has recently been doubted on several grounds. There may well, nonetheless, be some portion of truth in it, for this copy of the Gutenberg Bible (hereafter ULC B42) was assuredly in Strassburg at a very early date.4 The gilt calf binding of ULC B42 is British rather than continental, of the early 1 8th century, and throws no light on pre-Hopetoun ownership. It dates from before the time when the Gutenberg Bible was generally recognized as the first, or first substantial, piece of European printing; the spine labels identify their contents only as a BIBLIA LATINA EDIT. ANTIQ.5 The fine decorated initials of this copy have been studied by Dr Eberhard Konig. He at first was unable to localize them, but subsequently assigned them to either a Basel or Strassburg atelier which, in light of what we now learn of the book's history, looks like a very happy suggestion.6 I first had occasion to examine ULC B42 in April 1984, at which time my chief concern was to record the sequence of its paper stocks. I noticed, at first almost subliminally as I turned the leaves against the light, that a regular series of marginal marks in brown ink was presenting itself thus: # .
