- W577188013 abstract "This article describes the use of cold mix recycling of old roads in North Kent, using a modified Bomag mph 100 R machine. It has proved to be cheap, quick, and have an energy usage of 20% of conventional new hot-mix material. The importance of detailed site investigation is stressed, particularly the assessment of the following criteria: in situ California bearing ratio of the subgrade; strength of cement based materials (if present); and location and depth of underground services. Cold mixed bitumen material is only about 80% as efficient as hot mixed material in its load bearing capacity and this must be taken into account in pavement design. Cement stabilization is slightly cheaper than bitumen stabilized material and less moisture and material susceptible. However, the curing period during construction and the ongoing potential maintenance problems are disadvantageous. Emulsion stabilized material is more sensitive to weather and needs additional cement to ensure stability under compaction and early trafficking. Foam bitumen stabilization (Foamstab) does not have these disadvantages and studies of cores taken after one week and from laboratory prepared specimens indicate that its creep performance and Marshall stabilities are comparable with hot-mix materials.
