- W57719552 abstract "Abstract This study investigates differences between deep understanding and superficial understanding of graphics and texts based on the assumption that graphics comprehension is a structure mapping process between visuo-spatial relations in a graphic and semantic relations in a mental model. Adult learners received a time zone map of the earth and a hypertext dealing with time and date, and they had to answer a series of questions about this topic. More successful learners were more likely to access the relevant information at the relevant time than the less successful learners. The more successful learners also interpreted more encompassing sectors of the map, whereas the less successful learners often restricted their interpretation to only small sectors of the map. The mental models of the more successful learners were more elaborated, and these learners were more likely to apply adequate procedures on their mental models. Less successful learners frequently made errors due to a non-application of adequate procedures or an application of inadequate procedures. Based on these results, instructional consequences of how to foster knowledge acquisition from graphics and texts are pointed out. Resume La recherche presentee ici etudie en quoi une comprehension approfondie de graphiques et de textes se differencie ďune comprehension plus superficielle. Le cadre theorique presente suppose que la comprehension des graphiques est un processus ďorganisation structurale entre les relations spatiales presentes dans le graphique et les relations semantiques du modele mental correspondant, processus pouvant egalement ětre realise a partir ďun texte. S'appuyant sur ce cadre theorique, on analyse les differences de performances de traitement de graphiques et de textes entre des “bons” et des “mauvais compreneurs”. On presentait a des adultes une carte des fuseaux horaires de la terre ainsi qu'un hypertexte traitant de ľheure et de la date et ils devaient repondre a une serie de questions sur ce theme. Une comparaison des traitements effectues par le groupe des “bons” et des “mauvais” compreneurs indique que les “bons” avaient un comportement plus specifique dans la recuperation ďinformations, et qu'ils accedaient plus facilement a ľinformation pertinente du texte au moment opportun que les “mauvais” compreneurs. Les “bons” ont aussi interprete plus de secteurs environnants de la carte, et, en consequence, ont atteint une coherence plus grande dans leur structuration que les “mauvais” compreneurs, qui ont souvent restreint leur interpretation a de petits secteurs de la carte. Les modeles mentaux des “bons compreneurs” etaient aussi plus elabores, et ces derniers appliquaient plus facilement des procedures sur leurs modeles mentaux. Les “mauvais” compreneurs ont fait des erreurs provoquees soit par ľabsence ďapplication des procedures adequates soit par ľapplication de procedures inadequates, et ce plus souvent que les “bons” compreneurs. Aux vues de ces resultats, les implications educatives concernant les moyens de favoriser ľacquisition de connaissances a partir de graphiques et de textes sont envisagees." @default.
