- W577349595 abstract "Good wet-night visibility is a major objective of highway delineation. The primary objective of the research project described in this report was to develop a lane marking system that has good visibility, has porosity and texture characteristics similar to open graded asphalt friction courses, and has good resistance to traffic and snowplow activity. The porous marking systems developed are composed of narrowly graded aggregate, binder, pigment, glass beads, and boid space. The scope of the study included binder compound selection, mixture formulation, laboratory evaluation of various systems, and a two-stage field evaluation of promising porous marking systems. Field evaluation of the porous marking systems was conducted on an expressway entrance ramp in Georgia and on a four-lane highway in Virginia. Delineator installation procedures and serviceability examination techniques are described. Wet-night visibility of the porous marking systems was evaluated using an automobile-mounted telephotometer. Based upon the results of the study, it is concluded that the combination of an open-graded asphalt friction course and a special porous delineator centerline strips provide superior wet-ngith delineation compared to conventional beaded paint stripes on a dense asphalt surface. The project results do not establish the life expectancy or overall economy of optimumly designed and installed porous delineation systems.
