- W577378162 abstract "Saturation flow measurements are essential for optimising the control of signalised traffic junctions. Manual measurement of saturation flows is time consuming and error-prone, and flows calculated from empirical models cannot take full account of site-specific and time-variant factors. The problems of saturation flow measurement affect the MOVA traffic signal control system, which requires saturation flow data to maximise capacity and minimise delay. MOVA (Microprocessor Optimised Vehicle Actuation) has significantly improved traffic signal control at isolated junctions in the UK (Peirce and Webb, 1990), but further improvements are continuously sought and response to changing saturation flows has been identified as a priority for development. A computerised method of saturation flow measurement using inductive loop detectors (or equivalent) is therefore being developed by TRL, with funding from the MOVA Development Group (a group that includes the UK Department for Transport, Highways Agency, TRL, MOVA users, and MOVA manufacturers). The method automates and simplifies the measurement of saturation flows, tracking changing values over time, and producing real-time saturation flow values that reflect current driving conditions. The method is stand-alone and could be implemented within any suitable signal control or monitoring program, or used within traffic microsimulation programs. Results so far have been promising, and on-street trials are beginning. Assuming the method works reliably, the data collected will be extremely valuable in determining future junction design.
