• W577708797 abstract "The Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) ship shows great promise for naval and civil applications. However, high-speed manoeuvring is a problem because of the directional stability imparted by the wallsided hulls, and to find a solution to this the DTNSRDC has carried out a series of rotating-arm experiments, on a SWATH 6A model, in which three types of rudders were evaluated. These were a strut (a movable section of the strut), a spade (a surface-piercing aft of the strut) and a retractable forward foil beneath the hull (this rudder develops a force through its fixed angle of attack and the camber of its section). The Authors discuss the experimental techniques used (an explanation for not using the planar-motion mechanism is included), give an account of the tests, and present and discuss the results. It was concluded that the rotating-arm technique can be successfully used for this type of investigation; the results indicate that the spade has comparatively good performance under various operating conditions." @default.
