- W578170687 abstract "For many years a vehicle crash test using a perpendicular rigid barrier at 50 kph has been the basis for assessing the frontal impact performance of cars. Many other test modes have evoluated among them, rigid barrier offset impacts, rigid barrier angular impacts, with different speeds and dummies configurations. Still up to now, there are many debates on which test procedure represents the average statistical front crash occurrence in the real world. During the recent years the EEVC (European Experimental Vehicles Committee) has developed a frontal offset impact test procedure with a fixed deformable barrier. This is based on the assumption that a deformable barrier test shows a better correlation with car-to-car collisions. As a result of accident research of frontal impact accidents the passenger compartment intrusion is stated as one of the main causes of fatal and serious injuries to car occupant. Furthermore, public media and consumer organizations have followed in using deformable barrier and car-to-car tests in the assessment of the passive safety of vehicles. This paper describes a computational investigation of a car-to-car frontal collision involving a large and a compact vehicle and a comparison with barrier tests of various kinds. A sophisticated crash software based on the Finite Element approach is used for this evaluation. Nowadays such Finite Element calculations are fully integrated in the design process of motor vehicles. The design of a vehicle is optimized by computer simulation before a hardware test is conducted to prove out the performance. Using such an approach for the present investigation shows considerable benefits instead of studying all the different impact modes by vehicle crash testing.
