• W578516079 abstract "An advanced traveler information system aimed at realizing comfortable, efficient, and safe travel in the suburbs and regions has been developed. The system especially focuses on the improvement of regional transportation rather than that of inter-urban or intra-urban areas. In the target areas, automobiles - especially small cars - are the primary transport means for daily living and weekend leisure. The service presented by the system has been examined to meet users' needs in the areas. The system handles semi-real time information that is compensation for real-time traffic information provided by public organizations. The main services are event information in the area that is related to daily or weekend driving and effects of road conditions. Public or private sectors provide the information concerning their events and facilities. It helps to improve driving comfort and efficiency of regional travel and also brings a positive impact to the regional traffic conditions. The system utilizes Data Radio Channel (DARC) FM data multiplex system as a communication medium. The user terminals are compatible with DARC receivers for Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS) or radio teletext systems. Basic services consisting mainly of text information are provided to all the users of DARC receivers. More beneficial full services are presented through the receivers with special software. Examples of these services are automatic destination setting or route guidance linked with event information, voice information or other functions that improve the human interface of in-vehicle information equipment. User equipment is classified into four types: in-vehicle information receiver; full navigation systems; variable message signs (VMS), and mobile DARC radios. The in-vehicle information receiver, compatible with DARC radio, has been specially developed to provide car users with full service of the system. By using the full navigation system with map display, information related route guidance service is presented. The VMSs are installed to roadside facilities to inform users without in-vehicle equipment such as motorcyclist, pedestrian, public transportation users. They can get the information through DARC radio as well. In this paper, the concept, architecture, and specifications of the system are presented. The first field trial in the Osaka suburban area to evaluate the system function and estimate user merit is also reported." @default.
