- W578764818 abstract "Classical theoretical orientation in social gerontology holds that the process of societal modernization serves to disadvantage the elderly (Cowgill 1974). The increased mobility of younger adults and their nuclear families in response to changed economic situations is especially cited as problematic. Technological changes are thought to be easier for the young than the old to adopt or adapt to their lives. The assumption that family requires stability to function well is a social value more related to certain social and economic institutions than to normal family processes (Settles 1993). We have often been more intrigued by the stability families offer their members and have tended to see change as disintegration or dysfunction rather than as strength (Parsons & Bales 1955; Zimmerman 1972; Etzioni 1977; Huber & Spitze 1988). Families and individuals naturally change and develop across the life course. Life span transitions are the normal story of nuclear family formation and dissolution (White 1991). The relationships among generations are woven around changing dependency and caregiving demands so that the exchange of power and responsibility is an ongoing function. When these changes are thwarted by resistance to them we see dysfunction and difficulty. Unwillingness to deal with deficits and new relationships can result in tragedy because the family is too rigid to make the adjustments needed (Hanks & Settles 1990)." @default.
