- W58019994 abstract "There is a considerable body of work produced by authors such as May,1 Burnett,2 and Dobriner3 that discusses the history of housing, suburbs, class and the impact of social factors on the growth patterns of western cities. There is also substantial literature written regarding the physical and social history of the cities of London, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, examples are books written by Ackroyd,4 Roe,5 Newnham,6 Birch7 and Kelly.8 The aim of this dissertation is to determine whether the social development of these cities aligns with the theoretical literature and whether or not the theories remain true for each city in spite of topographical variations. The endeavour is to ascertain whether topography could be a dominating and continuing influence in the social and physical development of a city. The dissertation seeks to establish a relationship between the topography of the area immediately surrounding the town settled as Brisbane in 1824 and to discern the impact that topography had on the growth and social and physical form of its early suburbs. Further the work attempts to identify what might set Brisbane apart from other cities and whether or not the social and class differences that have influenced the development of suburbs in England, in particular London could be traced on to an Australian city. The purpose of these findings is to provide an historical and geographical connection between Brisbane’s distinctive topography and its early housing and suburb formations. The demonstration of this relationship and the discussion of social interactions provide an insight into the extent that class influenced the early development of Brisbane’s residential built environment. The findings suggest that Brisbane did not rely completely on traditional ideas of class influence for the choices of location and position of early housing. ________________ 1 Trevor May, An Economic and Social History of Britain 1760 -1970 (Harlow: Longman House, 1987). 2 John Burnett, A Social History of Housing 1815 -1970 (London: Methuen & Co.
