- W580454912 abstract "The obesity prone (OP)/obesity resistant (OR) rat has been used to examine renal and oxidative mechanisms involved in development of obesity-hypertension. The purpose of this study was to determine whether this model is useful for studing obesity-related cardiac dysfunction. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (394±4 g) were implanted with telemetry transmitters (model PA-C40, Data Sciences International) and assigned to normal fat diet (NFD, n=7) and high fat diet (HFD, n=17) groups. After 12 wks, rats on the HFD exhibiting greatest weight gains were referred to as OP (n=6) while rats on the HFD exhibiting lowest weight gains were referred to as OR (n=5). Under isoflurane anesthesia, a pressure transducer (Mikro-tip 3F, model SPR-249, Millar Instruments) was advanced into the left ventricle (LV) via the left common carotid artery to obtain end diastolic pressure (EDP), peak LV pressure, LV +dP/dt, LV –dP/dt, and +dP/dt normalized for aortic mean pressure (+dP/dt/P). Groups were compared using one-way ANOVA. Results indicated that peak LV pressure, EDP, and developed pressure were not significantly different among groups. LV +dP/dt, −dP/dt, and +dP/dt/P were also not significantly different among groups (see Table). Although renal damage may occur early in development of obesity in the OP/OR rat model, cardiac abnormalities are not evident after 12 wks of developing obesity. Support by NIH HL04297 and HL64913." @default.
