- W58056006 abstract "The properties of neutrons which make their use unique as a probe of condensed matter include: (a) The interaction between neutrons and condensed matter is weak, making theoretical treatment relatively simple. (b) Neutron absorption is usually low and thus large sample volumes can be used. (c) The wavelength of neutrons (0.2–2 nm) is appropriate to the study of atomic separation and macromolecular dimensions. (d) Molecular vibrational energies are of the same magnitude as neutron energies (400–0.4 J mol−1) enabling investigation of molecular dynamics. (e) Neutrons possess a magnetic moment which may interact with unpaired electrons and magnetic excitations to provide information on the magnetic structure and dynamics of matter. (f) The neutron-nucleus scattering does not change in a systematic manner as a function of atomic number or atomic mass. It also varies in magnitude from one isotope to another, therefore by simple isotopic substitution the scattering intensity can be radically changed." @default.
