- W58066352 abstract "This chapter focuses on the role of sodium and potassium in metabolic control. All living cells have to a greater or lesser degree the ability to bring about and maintain an internal ionic composition, which may be very different from that of the surrounding medium. There is a close correlation between the Na-, K-ATPase activity in different tissues and their ability to transport sodium, the two richest sources of the ATPase being brain and the electric organ. In a study described in the chapter, it was found in a crab nerve that about half the normal metabolic activity seems to be linked with active transport and with cation concentrations. The functional activity of the organ determines the rate at which the ionic concentration gradients are run down." @default.
