- W58096938 abstract "Critics of David Gauthier have pointed out that even if it is more advantageous to be a constrained maximizer than a straightforward maximizer, there may be alternative dispositions that are more advantageous than constrained maximization. One plausible candidate of such a disposition is what David Copp calls a reserved maximizer: a person who is disposed to cooperate but violates cooperative norms whenever he has an opportunity to make very great gains in utility and the probability of being detected of doing so is very low. This chapter examines this third challenge to Gauthier’s Translucency Assumption. It evaluates whether empirical findings suggest reserved maximization is indeed more advantageous than constrained maximization. It is argued that given that reserved maximizers may be expected to look less trustworthy than constrained maximizers and will due to human imperfections sometimes violate mistakenly, it is not evident that being a reserved maximizer is indeed more advantageous than being a constrained maximizer." @default.
