- W581049870 abstract "The structure and design practices associated with flexible pavements in the UK are briefly outlined. There follows a description of the faults which commonly develop in this type of construction, namely rutting (permanent localised deformation), transverse cracking and slippage of the wearing course. The paper goes on to examine the feasibility of incorporating composite polymeric reinforcing members in their construction. The material used in the study is commercially available and consists of bundles of terylene fibres surrounded by a polyethylene sheath, the composite material being known as paraweb. Measurements are described of the relevant mechanical properties of the material over the range of temperature which it is likely to encounter in the proposed application. It is shown that, because of its composite construction and the mechanism by which tensile forces are transferred to the terylene fibres, there exists a critical length. Pull-out tests of lengths of the material embedded in asphalt cubes have enabled the interfacial shear strength (between polyethylene sheath and asphalt) to be measured. The paper concludes with an outline of some of the problems which might be encountered in site application and makes some suggestions for further work. (Author/TRRL)" @default.
