- W581099617 abstract "The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) took a new step in addressing a comprised base under U.S. Highway 50, which it rehabilitated after two sections built in 1995 and 1998 demonstrated rapid failing, with 25% structural faulting, more than 15 years ahead of schedule. After ascertaining that the highway was continuing to deteriorate despite conventional rebuilding efforts, KDOT staff theorized that the lime-clay design mix in the lime-treated clay sub- grade was inadequately mixed and being subjected to excess moisture because of faults in the adjacent drain system. Rather than overlay the roadway, which would not have provided a long-term solution, KDOT studied three undersealing products, a cementitious grout, an asphalt emulsion, and a proprietary polyurethane. They were field tested, and the patented Uretek 486 Star polyurethane was successful. Liquid is injected through small holes, and the product expands with controlled pressure to penetrate even the smallest voids. It sealed satisfactorily and even consolidated the bound drainable base. It was also the most cost-effective of the three. KDOT determined that 75% of the highway could benefit from the treatment at one-third the cost of replacing it. 50 miles of highway were treated in 50 days." @default.
