- W581326028 abstract "The activities were finalized, in their different articulations, to the implementation of new criteria and methods of biomonitoring for the assessment of exposure to trace elements of different population groups. At first the occupational exposure to the elements of the platinum group (palladium, platinum and rhodium) was evaluated by an innovative ICP-MS approach based on a high resolution detector (SF-ICP-MS). These elements has been proposed as effective biomarkers of exposure for populations occupationally exposed to vehicular traffic.Furthermore a sensitive, specific, multielemental and high-throughput analytical SF-ICP-MS method was developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of 20 trace elements in human blood, the method was then applied for setting reference values for trace elements in the general population.Moreover, surveys were conducted in the experimental screening of neoplastic diseases, in particular studying the predictive value of toxicologically important trace elements in the early detection of colorectal cancer. The results showed a probable inverse relationship between levels of Ba, Cd and Hg, and outbreaks of lesions, and confirmed the trend towards accumulation of Fe and Se in pathological tissues. The last phase of the study, currently in progress, is based on the development of methods of screening and confirmation, respectively through electrochemical sensors and SF-ICP-MS, applied for the study of the exposure - through the breast milk - of a sensitive group of population (newborns) to a neurotoxic element as lead.The experimental models developed during the thesis work, were verified in different research areas and showed elevated application power and particular versatility. The proposed analytical methods can therefore be proposed as innovative approach for the implementation of biomonitoring programs and strategies for primary prevention of risk related to trace elements for human health protection." @default.
