- W58173863 abstract "EXECUTIVE SUMMARY | There is no simple way to decide how many demand planners a company needs. The author posits and discusses six essential factors to consider when determining the answer: What is expected from a demand planner? What kind of demand planning process is in place? How many forecasts have to be prepared, and what level of detail is required? How much accuracy is needed? What kind of forecasting technology is available to do the job?A question often asked, particularly at the time of economic uncertainty, is how many demand planners do we need? Too many planners will cost too much money, and too few may cost even more if we wind up with bad forecasts as a result. Over-forecasts cost money becauseoffire sales, inventory buildup, and obsolescence. Under-forecasts, on the other hand, result in loss of sales and expediting costs. There is no set answer to how many demand planners a company needs. There are six salient factors to consider:1. Expectations from a demand planner,2. Demand planning process,3. Amount of data available,4. Number of forecasts to be prepared,5. Desired forecast accuracy, and6. Technology available.Expectations from a Demand Planner: The demand planning process includes preparing forecasts and managing demand. When you expect a demand planner to do both, the job will be done, though not as effectively as you may like to see. It may be too much for one demand planner to single-handedly gather, clean, and analyze data, and then prepare forecasts. After the forecasts are prepared, he or she is expected to manage the demand by synchronizing supply with demand. The job can be done with one demand planner, but the company may wind up with over-stock one time and under-stock another time, neither of which is desirable.Demand Planning Process: The number of demand planners needed also depends on the demand planning process being used. Both SO others are much more difficult. It is easier to manage if forecasts areto be based on shipment or demand data. If Point-ofSale (POS) data have to be used, the analysis becomes much more difficult and time consuming. This type of data gives a better handle on what is happening in the marketplace, which every demand planner wants to know, but are difficult to manage because of the sheer size and complexity involved. If the data generated from social media have to be used, it would be even more time consuming.Number of Forecasts to be Prepared: How many forecasts are to be prepared and the level of detail required also affect the number of demand planners needed. …" @default.
