- W58206868 abstract "Both dualists and physicalists have come to classify the mental under the rubrics of and incorrigibility?as seen in the modern focus on pain talk. The way to this simplification was paved in part by a sense of drama, which sought a sharp demarcation between mind and body; in part by the epistemological turn of modern thought, which saw human reality as inherently subjective; and in part by a methodological concern, which looked for a test case in terms of which the controversy between physical ism and dualism could be appraised. So dualists, from Descartes to Kripke, argued that talk of feels, like pains, is irreducible to physical terms, is private, and incorrigible; while physicalists, from Hobbes to Quine, held that pain talk is reducible to physical terms, is public, and corrigible. Ironically, however, this simplification only led others to conclude that the controversy itself is trivial and relative. Rorty has argued, for instance, that a grown-up could hardly care, one way or the other, whether raw feels are reducible to physical terms or are incorrigible; hence a grown-up would soon come to see that the whole issue was relative to other, primarily historical, considerations. To overcome this impasse between dualists, physicalists, and relativists on the interpretation of mind, a new position is needed?namely, mind body bounded continuism. A bounded continuum in mathematics is a precise term. It denotes a dense and non-denumerable ordered set with an upper and lower bound. A set is dense just when it is ordered, i.e., in a series, and between any" @default.
