That was only a couple of months ago and the bank, like most of its peers, had no involvement in the subprime mortgage business. These are the people that like us, the banker observed, adding, It's hard to get people to go below the surface of the negative headlines and stories in the media. The customer survey he used was included in an ABA Toolbox called Telling Your Bank's Story--a resource for banks to help offset the effects of negative publicity stemming from the financial crisis and its ongoing fallout. The toolbox was made available this April to ABA members, and more than 1,200 have been downloaded at www.aba.com/members+only/bankstory_toolbox. htm. The resource was prepared at the request of ABA's Proud to be a Banker Task Force, set up by ABA Chairman Steve Wilson late last year. Wilson, CEO of LCNB National Bank, Lebanon, Ohio, made improving banks' reputation one of his top priorities for his term. He points out that the overreaching Dodd-Frank Act is a glaring example of how misinformation about banking can drive bad public policy. The buttons pictured at left (just a sampling of many out there) are part of the campaign to strengthen banks' reputation. ABA offers help to banks or state bankers associations to arrange for the buttons to be produced. Wilson has spoken at 31 state conventions so far this year and reports that he has seen many bankers wearing the buttons, so the message has hit home. But as he told the members of the task force on a recent conference call, the job is not done yet. We need to increase the awareness of, and use of, the toolbox. Both Wilson and Matt Williams, ABA vice-chairman, and co-chairman (with Ohio bank CEO Bick Weissenrieder) of the task force, have been urging bankers to name someone--a go-getter with the right skills--to head up the effort to implement toolbox components. Aside from the customer survey and the banker buttons, the toolbox includes letters to employees and directors, media talking points, and an impact statement to help quantify banks' community support. The latter point addresses an ongoing challenge: Most people--including policymakers--either don't know or take for granted the good things banks do for individuals, communities, and the economy as a whole.
