- W585107867 abstract "This book intends to stimulate scholarly inquiry into the policy area of illegal Mexican immigration and to inspire concern for human rights in a broad context. Journalistic accounts frequently stress the plight of Mexicos alienated poor. They devote less attention to the human rights of Americans whose lives are affected often adversely by illegal immigration. Very little attention has been given to the emotional and physical toll which the enforcement of immigration law has had on the US Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and Border Patrol officers. Some of that toll can be blamed on special interests in the US Congress and throughout the government system which benefit from illegal labor and therefore want only token enforcement of the immigration laws. What has impressed the author most about the INS and Border Patrol officers is their sense of fair play and their humanitarian commitment in treating the illegal Mexican aliens as needy human victims who are fleeing a socioeconomic and political environment not known for its compassion. A series of appendices present a variety of views and commentaries on the problem of illegal Mexican aliens in the US. Some of these are original documents printed here for the 1st time. Some balance is sought between expressions of concern for alien rights concern for the rights and needs of law enforcement professionals and concern for the molding of a coherent and responsive public policy on illegal immigration." @default.
