- W585651433 abstract "In the vicinity of motorways, high concentrations of gaseous and particulate air constituents can be measured. On the one hand, the correct prediction of these concentrations depends on the quality of the used emission data. On the other hand, traffic induced turbulence must be taken into account because the vehicles generate wake eddies which can lead to an effective turbulent diffusion on and nearby the motorway. A parameterisation of traffic induced turbulence is presented and its impact on the concentration distribution of carbon monoxide downstream a motorway is discussed by comparing model results with measured vertical profiles. These measurements as well as measurements of the horizontal profile of turbulence near the ground across the motorway were performed as part of the BAB II field campaign. The comparison of model results and measurements shows the necessity to take into account traffic induced turbulence. Using an additional turbulence production term due to the flow over the one meter high embankment on which the motorway is running leads to an improvement of the results. The applied model system KAMM / DRAIS with the implemented gas phase reaction mechanism RADM2 allows as well the simulation of concentration distributions of species like nitrogen oxides or ozone which have high reaction rates.
