- W585962316 abstract "This article examines how European bus manufacturers are attempting to design buses that are more convenient for their passengers to use. Recent developments in new technology now make it possible to introduce low floors and small step heights. Some of the new approaches are completely different from traditional engineering methods. For example, the Neoplan MIC Metroline design, which is described in detail here, is based on a frameless carbon fibre composites 'tube' which forms the bus body. For other, more traditional methods of construction, completely new ways had to be found to reconcile suspension and driveline needs with the restricted clearance resulting from lowering the floor. For example, the layout of the Mercedes-Benz low floor prototype 'scatters' individual seats in a perimeter arrangement at the back of the bus. Although not of special interest for ordinary users, improved step and door layouts are critically important to disabled and old people. Other features, having more direct marketing appeal, are: (1) livery and colour schemes; (2) bright and cheerful interior furnishings; (3) ergonomically efficient seating; (4) new arrangements of passenger space and seat configuration in minibuses; (5) effective ventilation and heating systems.
