- W5861073 abstract "Septic systems are among the most common means of treating human sewage in coastal regions, especially in areas distant from metropolitan sewage-treatment facilities. Septic systems can function well, given suitable hydrological and soil conditions; however, numerous reports from coastal regions in the United States find that these systems discharge excessive levels of nutrients and fecal microbes into coastal waters, including those used for shellfishing. In many situations, coastal soils are sandy and porous, allowing rapid transmission of constituents. When this is coupled with a high groundwater table, treatment is insufficient, resulting in septic leachate plumes that can extend over 100 m into coastal waters. In some areas such as the Florida Keys, carbonate karst soils allow very rapid movement of pollutants from septic drain fields. Nutrient plumes can significantly contribute to coastal eutrophication, and microbial pollution is a human health issue in shellfish consumption and water recreation; thus, alternative treatment options should be adopted in such situations." @default.
