- W586163669 abstract "The difficulties and uncertainties in the stability evaluation of embankments composed of, or founded on, materials with different engineering characteristics have long confronted geotechnical engineers. Failure of these structures frequently occurs, despite careful investigation, testing and analysis procedures. The analytical problems are often ascribed to the non-linear stress-strain behaviour of geotechnical materials and the calculation of the interaction between zones with different characteristics. This paper illustrates an analytical technique to evaluate the safety of geotechnical structures in general, using the results of calculated stresses and strains developed under working conditions between layers of different materials. An example is used of high embankments that have failed owing to incompatible stress-strain characteristics of their constituent materials and the under-lying foundation soil. The back-analysis results are shown to afford a better understanding of the strength mobilization within the system and thus be instrumental in the design of a cost-effective rehabilitation structure. The soil-structure interaction evaluation is shown to play an important part in the economical design of the new structure. The predicted behaviour is compared with measurements on site.
