- W587090717 abstract "Motor vehicle drivers involved in accidents have more crimes in their records than comparable accident-free drivers. This holds for all types of crimes. The study covers crimes committed in a five-year period before the accident. The largest differences are found between those who have been drunk at the accident and those who are accident-free. The drunk accident-involved drivers are 90 per cent male, and out of these, 54 per cent have been registered for crimes of various kinds in the five-year-period before the accident. This is four times as many as among comparable accident-free drivers. The differences are also large among private car drivers and motorcycle drivers. For instance, 30 per cent of males below the age of 25 have been convicted in the period before the accident. This is approximately twice as many as compared to accident-free drivers. For bus and heavy truck drivers the differences are relatively smaller, and the number of crimes per convicted smaller. More than one third of the motorcycle drivers with a crime record were found without a license at the accident, compared to 14 per cent of those with a clean record. For drunken drivers the criminality is general in the sense that those with both traffic and other types of crimes in their records are more numerous that those with just one or the other type of crime. The most frequent crime among accident-involved drivers is driving without a valid license. Other frequent types of crimes are thefts and car thefts, crimes of narcotics and drunk driving. The results can be used as a basis when considering target groups and what types of road safety actions that might be effective. The chances to reach and influence target groups probably decrease in relation to the proportion of individuals with a crime history. In such cases other types of measures are to be preferred, general measures which are not depending on the active participation of the road user. Such general measures deal with, for instance, traffic environment or the vehicles. The study included 200 000 motor vehicle drivers. (A)" @default.
