- W587242941 abstract "Aim: The greatest resource in a company is their employees and the knowledge they possess. It is therefore important to utilize and develop the knowledge of everyone within the company. As an individual it is obvious that a factor such as gender should not affect the level of opportunities at work. We therefore chose to write an essay about equal opportunities. The purpose is to find out if the insurance company Folksam can be considered as an equal opportunities employer. We will investigate if women and men who work at Folksam feel that they have equal opportunities, that neither their gender nor the structure of the organization affects their chances of development.Method: We have used a qualitative approach. We interviewed six employees (three women, three men) who work at three different sections at Folksam, Gavle. For the empirical study we have also made use of Folksam’s internal material. For the theoretical element we have used relevant books and the homepage of ”Jamstalldhetsombudsmannen” In our analysis we have compared our empirical study with the theory chapter to finally come up with our conclusion.Result & Conclusions: In our study we found that Folksam Sodra Norrland in general is an equal opportunities employer since they fulfill the requirement of a 40/60% representation of both genders. Folksam has also set up a plan of equality according to the laws of equal opportunities, although most of the employees are not aware of it. This appears, according to this study, to be due to a lack of interest in the issue and a view that the concerns lie at a higher level. Although Folksam empirically is an equal opportunities employer, certain departments are still divided according to gender. For example mechanics and customer service support. This is however due to factors such as women not applying for jobs at the technical department because they do not have much experience of car garages. To change this the company could, rather than seeing it as a societal problem, reach out to young people and inform them of different routes in education in engineering and what jobs could lead on from being a car mechanic. The study finally shows that gender or the organizational structure at Folksam does not appear as an obstacle for women’s and men’s opportunities for promotion or training.Suggestions for future research: We would find it interesting to delve deeper into the questions we’ve touched upon. It would be interesting to further study the underlying views of society that work against equal opportunities, views that partly originate from tradition. We could map these out in order to, at a higher level, facilitate change.Contribution of the thesis: We have found that things needs to be done in order to reach equality. It relies upon company not laying over the whole responsibility on society, but realising that they are also a part of it and must contribute accordingly." @default.
