- W587397672 abstract "A new generation of concrete is greatly altering the design and construction of bridges across the United States. High-performance concrete (HPC) is specially engineered to enhance specific properties such as strength and durability. While HPC contains the same basic ingredients as conventional concrete, mixes generally feature lower water-to-cement ratios and rely more heavily on mineral admixtures to boost performance. Silica fume ash been used to accelerate early strength gains, while fly ash has produced greater long-term strengths. Its strength properties have been shattering records in the building industry since the mid-1980s, but recent applications in U.S. bridges are raising expectations about design life of highway structures as well as achievable span lengths and beam spacing. HPC bridges are the norm in some European countries, but they have yet to make a big dent in the U.S. market. The Federal Highway Administration has tried to jump-start interest with a showcase program begun in 1993 that offers financial assistance for HPC projects. This program is highlighted in a sidebar." @default.
