- W587722662 abstract "A simple broadbrush model of typical morning peak road travel is described, with illustrative results and implications for peak spreading research. As traffic congestion increases on a typical urban network, the morning peak period becomes longer and departure times tend to get earlier. Some people seem willing to travel earlier even if they then arrive much earlier than they would prefer and some may postpone trips. Possibly many more people make small adjustments. This adjustment process is currently being researched at TRRL and many factors affect it, but the relative importance of each is not yet known. The paper describes a simple peak spreading model of urban car travel, spatially aggregated over an area, which examines how the shape of the peak flows changes with traffic demand. The model allows travellers the possibility of trading off extra travel time against the disutility of a different time of arrival. The values of travel time, early arrival and late arrival can all be different, and can vary for different groups of travellers. The speed of travel is assumed to depend on the number travelling using a simple speed/flow relationship. Preliminary illustrative results suggest that most of the observed flattening, lengthening and shifting forward of the peak may be forced by journeys taking longer rather than by deliberate retiming of arrival. Deliberate retiming of trips is more likely when there are some travellers who are less constrained to arrive at their desired time than others. In practice this variation may help to reduce traffic speeds between the peak and off-peak as many non-work trips are already retimed away from the peak periods. In peak spreading research, all actual and potential travellers must therefore be considered, not just workers. For the covering abstract of the seminar see IRRD 816276." @default.
