- W588748510 abstract "This article describes some important road tunnel construction projects now in progress in Norway. The 24.5km long Laerdal-Aurland Tunnel will be the world's longest road tunnel when its drilling is completed in Autumn 1999. Its excavation by drill+blast began in 1995, and has been proceeding on three faces; recently, work began on a fourth face. Extensive use of steel-fibre reinforced sprayed concrete and end-anchored rockbolts are required to handle the rockbursts and spalling caused by the high rock overburden (up to 1450m) and high horizontal stresses. The 7.3km tunnel under Oslo Fjord will be the world's longest subsea road tunnel. It is being bored by drill+blast in gneisses with intrusions of other rocks. It is part of a new 27km long road and tunnel connection near Drobak about 40km south of Oslo; about 40% of the new road will consist of tunnels. The road is designed to connect communities on both sides of Oslo Fjord, and is due to open in July 2000. The new 35km long E18 motorway is being built through steep and undulating terrain south west of Oslo, to the west of Oslo Fjord. It will have seven twin-tube motorway tunnels, six of which have already been excavated. Work on the 5.3km tunnel between the islands of Hitra and Froya near Trondheim is due to be completed in 2001." @default.
