- W58902428 abstract "The experience of the New York City Office of Radiation Control in inspecting radiodiagnosis equipment of dentists and physicians is described. Many cases were found of neighbors being subjected to much higher radiation doses than the limits recommended because of x-ray equipment installed, for example, in a building directly above a superintendent's maintenance room, a chtldren's bicycle storage area, or an automatic laundry room located in an apartment house basement. The most important aspect of radiation control and the most difficult to administer is the elimination of unnecessary exposure to the patient. The most common cause of excessive exposure is the failure to limit the radiation beam to areas of clinical interest. Inspections showed that in chest x-ray examinations more than 2/3 of the equipment checked in New York City was provided with cones that exposed a much greater part of the body than was necessary to cover the x-ray film. In many cases the entire body, including the gonads, was being exposed, thereby resulting in a gonadal exposure many hundreds of times more than was actually necessary for chest films. Moreover, conditions used for development of films were often found to be unsatisfactory so that the dose to themore » patient was increased to obtain adequate image density. Many physicians perform routine chest x-ray examinations with fluoroscopes rather than with radiographic units employing films. Such examinations involve st run. Concent 100 times as much radiation as if a film were used. Since more fluoroscopes than radiographic units employing films are registered in New rork City, the use of fluoroscopy appears to be excessive. (TCO)« less" @default.
