- W58906837 abstract "Anemia is a common complication of myeloma that may already be manifest at the time of diagnosis. A high proportion of patients with myeloma presenting with anemia were reported in early publications: Kyle and colleagues (1) found hemoglobin (Hb) levels of less than 12.0 g/dL in 62% of patients diagnosed from 1960 to 1976; the authors of the third Medical Research Council trial, conducted between 1975 and 1978, reported Hb values of less than 10.0 g/dL in 49% of patients and severe anemia (Hb < 7.5 g/dL) in 19% of patients at the time of diagnosis (2). In a recent study—the European Cancer Anemia Survey (ECAS)— investigators identified 2316 patients with myeloma or non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) among 15,370 cancer patients who were followed for 6 mo to determine the distribution of most tumor types seen in clinical settings in Europe. The prevalence of anemia (Hb < 12 g/dL) among the patients with myeloma or NHL in this study was 52% at enrollment, and 73% of these patients had an Hb level of less than 12 g/dL at at least one observation point during the survey (3). Anemia usually (but not always) normalizes in patients who achieve complete remission after high-dose chemotherapy. However, it persists in patients who are unresponsive to myeloma treatment and recurs with a relapse or disease progression. Anemia frequently accompanies long-standing disease, when toxicity of long-term treatment, impairment of renal function, and a heavy tumor load contribute to its induction and aggravation." @default.
