- W589639265 abstract "In Austria elderly road users, car drivers and pedestrians, have a relatively high risk to be involved in an accident. Therefore in 1992 the Austrian ministry of transport wanted to improve the safety of elderly road users in general. The behaviour of elderly as traffic participants is described on the basis of the relevant international literature on accident statistics, behaviour observations and inquiries of elderly road users. Social-psychological as well as medical literature was analyzed by a team of sociologists, traffic-psychologists and a physician in order to find out main problems in the areas of sensory functions and learning abilities, psychological and social factors and the traffic system. One main result of the study is, that regarding the physiological status of a person there is not one certain age where people start to be elderly citizens, and where, e.g., testing and training activities would become necessary. The earlier a person starts to train his/her body and brain functions and the better the social integration the higher the probability of a relatively well-functioning body and brain. But at the same time, a lot of formal and informal rules in traffic could be found, which make it difficult for elderly people to survive on the road, so they tend to reduce their own mobility. But to be able to keep social contacts and improve life-quality mobility is a must. Problem solutions were focused on the traffic system and a lot of possibilities of modification were defined in the following areas: (1) traffic law; (2) road construction; (3) public transport; and (4) campaigns. All measures that represent modifications of the traffic system to the advantage of elderly road users e.g. reductions of vehicle speeds, shorter crossing distances and longer green-light periods for pedestrians, etc., seem to be very efficient in the sense that they improve both safety and comfort for other groups of road users and not only for the elderly. Therefore efforts regarding traffic safety should be focused more on the traffic system side than on the personal side. (A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 895590." @default.
