- W589787029 abstract "This article assesses the Ford Navigation System (FNS), which was developed by Ford with Bosch, and uses a satellite Global Positioning System (GPS). At present, the FNS covers only the area within the M25 motorway, but it should cover the whole of the UK by the end of 1996. If its trials are successful, it should then be widely available. To operate the system, a destination first needs to be entered, which is at present quite a long and tricky process which should not be attempted from a moving vehicle. After this, the system provides clear directions, and is very capable and quick at calculating a new route. However, the FNS at present tends to choose routes by A roads, even when B road routes are shorter, and it can fail to note 'no right turn' or 'no entry' signs. Useful future developments and improvements for the FNS would be to: (1) combine satellite navigation technology with information from the Traffic-master system, which monitors traffic flow around the UK; (2) as a security measure, combine with a system like Tracker; and (3) be able to handle multiple destinations, to avoid tiresome keystrokes after each stop. The benefits of the FNS include improved road safety and reduced journey times. An inset outlines the three main satellite navigation systems on the market." @default.
